Silicon dioxide (SiO2) is commonly used as an Anti-blocking Agent in film applications. Anti-blocking agents are substances
added to films to prevent them from sticking together or to other surfaces during storage or handling.
In the case of silicon dioxide, it is used as a coating or additive to create a microscopically rough surface on the film, which
reduces the contact area between film layers or between the film and other surfaces. This rough surface texture helps to
prevent blocking or adhesion by creating air gaps or reducing the surface energy of the film.
Silicon dioxide is preferred as an anti-blocking agent due to its transparency, high hardness, and chemical inertness. It does
not interfere with the optical properties of the film and provides excellent resistance to scratching or abrasion. Additionally, it is
non-toxic and safe for use in food packaging applications.
The addition of silicon dioxide as an anti-blocking agent can be done during the film manufacturing process, where it is either
mixed with the polymer melt or applied as a coating on the film surface. The concentration of silicon dioxide used depends on
the desired level of anti-blocking performance.
