Introduction
QX-139 is a structure modified Hydrophobic Fumed Silica
Thickening agents are commonly used in adhesives and sealants to increase their viscosity and improve their performance.
One popular thickening agent used in these applications is hydrophobic Fumed Silica.
Hydrophobic fumed silica is a fine, white, fluffy powder that is made by burning silicon tetrachloride in a flame of hydrogen
and oxygen. The resulting silica particles have a high surface area and are coated with hydrophobic materials, such as dimethyldichlorosilane or hexamethyldisilazane. This hydrophobic coating makes the silica particles repel water and enhances
their thickening properties.
When added to adhesives and sealants, hydrophobic fumed silica forms a three-dimensional network structure. This structure
increases the viscosity of the formulation, making it easier to apply and reducing sagging or dripping. The thickening effect also
helps to control the flow of the adhesive or sealant, preventing it from spreading too quickly and ensuring proper coverage.
Thixotropy is another important property of hydrophobic fumed silica. Thixotropy refers to the ability of a material to become less
viscous when subjected to shear stress, such as when it is stirred or applied. This property allows the adhesive or sealant to flow
easily during application, ensuring good wetting and adhesion to the substrate. However, once the shear stress is removed, the
material quickly recovers its original viscosity, preventing it from flowing or sagging over time.
In addition to thickening and thixotropy, hydrophobic fumed silica also offers other benefits in adhesives and sealants. It can
improve the mechanical properties of the formulation, such as its strength, flexibility, and resistance to deformation. It can also
enhance the stability and shelf life of the product by preventing settling or separation of the ingredients.
Overall, hydrophobic fumed silica is a versatile and effective thickening agent for adhesives and sealants. Its unique properties
make it suitable for a wide range of applications, providing improved performance and reliability.
